How pier and beam foundations work
A pier and beam foundation lifts the house off the ground. Concrete or masonry piers carry wood beams (girders), and floor joists span between the beams. The crawlspace underneath allows access for plumbing and repairs, but it also exposes wood framing to moisture from the clay soil below.
