Downspouts that dump at the slab
A single downspout can release a large amount of water right at one corner in a storm. Over time that corner behaves differently from the rest of the house.
Negative grading
Soil, flower beds, and mulch should slope away from the house. Beds built up over the years often end up sloping toward the slab and trapping water against it.
Pooling after rain
Standing water along one side, between houses on small lots, or at the back patio keeps the soil there saturated while other areas dry out.
Sprinklers and irrigation
Heads that spray the slab, zones that run too long on one side, and leaking lines add water unevenly, often year-round.
